For
several years, people have been migrating overseas to realize their dreams.
However, such moves demand robust planning so that you may comfortably settle
in the foreign country. In order to help you plan, this article provides a list
of 15 things that you need to keep in mind whether you aim to work or study
abroad.
Studying or Working Abroad? Keep These Things in Mind
1. Know your Permit: Get
in-depth view of your permit, whether it is a work or study permit. Know about
your rights as an international candidate. Also keep in view the limitations ofthe permit, so that your activities stay within the legal ambit. These details
can be extracted from those who have been to the country on the same visa or
from immigration website of the country.
2. Credibility of the Job or Admission Offer: Before
accepting the job/admission offer, make sure that the course or the employer is
authentic. Check if the body issuing the offer is registered with the
government.
3. Documentation: Carry
all the required original documents such as ID proofs, academic documents,
IELTS/ PTE test score cards, along with their photocopies. Don't forget to keep
the scanned soft copies of these documents as well.
4. Ways to Sponsor Your Move:
As travel and stay abroad is an expensive move, explore various scholarship
options (if you are a student), or know about the allowances provided by the
company that is employing you (if you are shifting due to work).
5. Plane Tickets: Plane
tickets must be bought 3 months before the travel. This is the best time to hit
the best deals and to buy tickets at the price that doesn't create a hole in
your pocket.
6. Emergency Contacts: It is
crucial to know the places where you are to report when you face any crisis at
a new place. Local contacts and embassy officials are of use in such adverse
situations.
7. Consult a Doctor: Make
sure to consult your doctor before leaving. Bring your prescriptions and
medicines from your native place as you may find it difficult to get them at the new place.
8. Insurance: Before
leaving, make sure that you have bought a travel and health insurance policy to
assist you in case of a mishap.
9. Local Connections: Try and
contact your acquaintances residing in the new country so that you can obtain
information about the essentials. Such connections can also be helpful in
arranging accommodation before your arrival.
10.
Accommodation: It is
better to arrange your accommodation in advance as it would help you feel
secure. It's better not to promise your stay for more than 6 months as you may
want to shift to a better place once you've known the area.
11. Purchasing: Avoid
overspending. Just take essentials that help you sustain for about 3 months as
later you will be able to get things from there.
12.
Know the Place: Knowing
the local customs, religions and traits of the people of the country would make
it easier for you to adjust. Most importantly, familiarize yourself with the
local law as it may be quite different from that in your native country. Also
research about the best food joints or shopping places that cater to your
interests.
13.
Plan Your Finances: Plan
your finances well in advance. You may also need to set up a bank account in a
local bank.
14.
Write Down Emergency Numbers: It
is better to maintain a written record of emergency contacts as digital devices
may fail in times of crisis.
15. Mental Makeup: It is
utterly essential to prepare yourself to adjust to the changed circumstances as
shifting abroad often means going away from the family, which often needs a lot
of courage.
